Product Description:
Qualtech Products Industry Carney Flowmeter with a Carney Funnel and a Hall Funnel is a precision density measurement instrument to determine the Carney Flow Rate, the Flow Qualities, the Bulk Density and the Apparent Density of loose sample products and loose sample materials, e.g. powders.
This professional Carney Flow Meter is designed and engineered offering a solid and ergonomic stand combined with a precision engineered Hall Flowmeter Funnel with an orifice diameter of 0.1″ (2.5 mm), a precision engineered Carney Funnel with an orifice diameter of 0.2″ (5 mm), a Density Cup, a digital Stopwatch, a Powder Tray, a Lid, a Brush, and much more.
An electronic high-precision scale and balance is optional available offering highest accuracy and precision to measure the Apparent Density of powders.
To ensure highest precision each Funnel is made of one larger piece of Stainless Steel or of Brass.
The Carney Funnel and the Hall Funnel are available in either Stainless Steel or Brass to best meet your requirements.
The Carney Flowmeter Method is performed in accordance with ASTM B417 and suggests to measure the time 50g of powder needs to pass through an orifice with a specified diameter.
This professional Carney Flow Meter is the ideal Apparent Density Measurement Instrument for research and quality management to efficiently evaluate the flow qualities and the apparent density of loose samples including metal powders.
This precision Carney Flowmeter is suitable to test a wide range of loose samples including food powder products, metal powders, plastic powders, ceramic powders, pharmaceutical powders, chemical powders, cement powders and many related materials.
This professional Carney Flowmeter Kit is designed and engineered in accordance with international test standards including:
- ASTM B212 (Standard Test Method for Apparent Density of Free-Flowing Metal Powders Using the Hall Flowmeter Funnel)

Carney Flowmeter - Applications:
- Carney Flowmeter Test: The powder flows succesfully through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel
- Apparent Density Measurement: The powder flows succesfully through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel
- Apparent Density Measurement: The powder doesn’t flow through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel, but flows succesfully through the Carney Flowmeter Funnel
- Apparent Density Measurement: The powder doesn’t flow through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel nor through the Carney Flowmeter Funnel, a Scott Volumeter is required to complete further tests.
Carney Flowmeter ASTM B417 – Apparent Density Analysis:
ASTM B417 defines the procedure for determining the apparent density of non‑free‑flowing metallic powders using the Carney funnel, a large‑orifice flowmeter designed for powders that cannot pass through the Hall funnel. The method evaluates how coarse, irregular, or high‑friction powders pack under gravity when discharged through a 5.0 mm Carney orifice into a standardized receiving cup.
Apparatus
The QPI‑CFM1800 Carney Flowmeter Kit is engineered to meet all dimensional and functional requirements of ASTM B417:
Carney funnel
Precision‑machined stainless steel
5.0 mm orifice diameter
Steep conical geometry to minimize bridging
Smooth internal finish for consistent discharge
Receiving cup
25 cm³ calibrated volume
Cylindrical stainless‑steel construction
Flat rim for accurate strike‑off
Support frame
Rigid vertical alignment between funnel and cup
Adjustable height and leveling feet
Analytical balance
Resolution ± 0.01 g
Sample handling tools
Scoop, spatula, brush for cleaning between tests
Principle of Operation
A metallic powder that does not flow through the Hall funnel is discharged through the larger Carney orifice. The powder fills a calibrated cup under gravity without vibration or compaction. The mass of powder occupying the known volume is used to calculate apparent density.
ASTM B417 Test Procedure
1. Instrument Preparation
Ensure the QPI‑CFM1800 is clean and free of residual powder.
Level the base using the adjustable feet.
Confirm the funnel outlet is centered directly above the receiving cup.
2. Sample Conditioning
Bring the powder to standard laboratory temperature (typically 23 ± 2 °C).
Break apart soft agglomerates manually without altering particle size.
3. Filling the Funnel
Close the funnel outlet using the supplied shutter or plate.
Pour the powder into the funnel until it is nearly full.
Avoid shaking, tapping, or compacting the powder.
4. Initiating Flow
Remove the shutter quickly to allow the powder to discharge freely.
Do not disturb the apparatus during flow.
Allow the cup to fill completely until flow stops naturally.
5. Leveling the Cup
Use a straight edge to strike off excess powder flush with the rim.
Maintain a smooth, single motion to avoid compressing the sample.
6. Weighing
Weigh the filled cup to the nearest 0.01 g.
Subtract the mass of the empty cup to obtain the net sample mass.
7. Calculation
Report values to three significant figures.
8. Repeatability
Perform at least three determinations.
Variation between results should not exceed ± 1 %.
Engineering Notes
ASTM B417 is specifically intended for non‑free‑flowing powders such as sponge iron, coarse atomized powders, and irregular metallic feedstocks.
The 5.0 mm Carney orifice is critical — it allows materials that fail Hall flow tests to be evaluated.
The QPI‑CFM1800’s rigid alignment ensures consistent discharge and reproducible packing behavior.
Cleaning between tests prevents contamination and maintains dimensional accuracy.
Interpretation of Results
Apparent density measured by ASTM B417 provides insight into:
Particle morphology (angularity, porosity, roughness)
Flow resistance and interparticle friction
Packing efficiency under gravity
Suitability for powder metallurgy processes such as pressing, sintering, and blending
It is commonly used for quality control, supplier verification, and feedstock characterization.
