Product Description:

Qualtech Products Industry Hall Flowmeter with a Hall Funnel and a Carney Funnel is a precision density measurement instrument to determine the Hall Flow Rate, the Flow Qualities, the Bulk Density and the Apparent Density of loose sample products and loose sample materials including powders.

This professional Hall Flow Meter is designed and engineered offering a precision engineered solid and ergonomic Stand combined with a precision engineered Hall Funnel with an orifice diameter of 0.1″ (2.5 mm), a precision engineered Carney Funnel with an orifice diameter of 0.2″ (5 mm), a Density Cup, a precision Digital Stopwatch, an advanced Powder Flow Guide Adapter, a Powder Tray, a Brush, and much more.

An Electronic High-Precision Scale and an Analytical Balance are optional available offering high accuracy and high precision when measuring the Apparent Density of powder samples.

To ensure highest precision each Funnel is made of one larger piece of Stainless Steel or of Brass.

The Hall Funnel and the Carney Funnel are available in Stainless Steel or Brass to best meet your requirements.

The Hall Flowmeter Method was invented by Elbert J. Hall in 1945 and suggests to measure the time 50g of powder needs to pass through an orifice with a specified diameter.

This professional Hall Flow Meter is the ideal Apparent Density Measurement Instrument for research and quality management to efficiently evaluate the Flow Qualities and the Flow Properties and the Apparent Density of loose samples including metal powders.

This precision Hall Flowmeter is suitable to test a wide range of loose samples including food powder products, metal powders, plastic powders, ceramic powders, pharmaceutical powders, chemical powders, cement powders and many related materials.

This professional Hall Flowmeter Kit is designed and engineered in accordance with international test standards including:

Hall Flowmeter - Applications:

  • Hall Flowmeter Test: The powder flows succesfully through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel
  • Apparent Density Measurement: The powder flows succesfully through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel
  • Apparent Density Measurement: The powder doesn’t flow through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel, but flows succesfully through the Carney Flowmeter Funnel
  • Apparent Density Measurement: The powder doesn’t flow through the Hall Flowmeter Funnel nor through the Carney Flowmeter Funnel, a Scott Volumeter is required to complete further tests.

Hall Flowmeter ASTM B212 & ASTM B213 - Flow Rate & Apparent Density Analysis:

These two ASTM standards define complementary methods for evaluating the flow characteristics and apparent density of metallic powders.

  • ASTM B212 measures the flow rate of a powder through a standardized funnel.

  • ASTM B213 determines the apparent density of the same powder using the same funnel geometry and a calibrated receiving cup.

Together, they provide a reproducible assessment of powder flowability, packing behavior, and consistency for powder metallurgy applications.

Apparatus

  • QPI‑HFM1800 Hall Flowmeter Kit, manufactured in accordance with ASTM B212 and ASTM B213 specifications:

    • Hall funnel: precision‑machined brass or stainless‑steel funnel with a 2.5 mm orifice and 60° cone angle, conforming to ASTM dimensional tolerances.

    • Stand assembly: rigid vertical support ensuring perfect alignment between funnel and receiving cup.

    • Receiving cup: cylindrical container with a 25 cm³ internal volume, calibrated for density determination.

    • Base platform: adjustable leveling feet for horizontal setup.

    • Stopwatch: resolution ± 0.1 s for timing flow rate.

    • Analytical balance: resolution ± 0.01 g for weighing samples.

ASTM B212 – Flow Rate Determination

Principle

A known mass of powder is allowed to flow freely through the Hall funnel under gravity. The time required for the entire sample to discharge is recorded. The result expresses the powder’s flow rate in seconds per 50 g or seconds per 100 g, depending on the material type.

Procedure

  1. Preparation:

    • Ensure the funnel and cup are clean and dry.

    • Level the apparatus using the adjustable feet.

    • Verify the funnel orifice is unobstructed.

  2. Sample Loading:

    • Close the funnel outlet using the supplied shutter.

    • Pour the powder into the funnel until it reaches the top edge.

    • Level the surface gently without compacting.

  3. Flow Test:

    • Remove the shutter and start the stopwatch simultaneously.

    • Allow the powder to discharge completely under gravity.

    • Stop timing when the last particle exits the funnel.

  4. Result Reporting:

    • Record the elapsed time as the flow rate.

    • If the powder does not flow freely, report “No Flow” as per ASTM B212.

ASTM B213 – Apparent Density Determination

Principle

A powder sample is allowed to flow through the same Hall funnel into a calibrated cup. The mass of powder occupying the known volume is measured to determine its apparent density.

Procedure

  1. Preparation:

    • Confirm the funnel and cup are clean and aligned vertically.

    • Level the apparatus.

  2. Sample Loading:

    • Close the funnel outlet.

    • Fill the funnel with powder to the top edge.

    • Avoid vibration or compaction.

  3. Flow and Filling:

    • Remove the shutter to allow powder to discharge freely into the cup.

    • When flow stops, strike off excess powder flush with the rim using a straight edge.

  4. Weighing and Calculation:

    • Weigh the filled cup to the nearest 0.01 g.

    • Subtract the mass of the empty cup to obtain the net sample mass.

    • Calculate apparent density:

Apparent Density (g/cm³ ) =Net Sample Mass (g) / 25 cm³

  1. Repeatability:

    • Perform at least three measurements.

    • The variation between results should not exceed ± 1 %.

Engineering Notes

  • ASTM B212 and B213 are fundamental tests for powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing feedstocks, and metallic powder quality control.

  • The QPI‑HFM1800’s precision funnel geometry ensures consistent discharge and reproducible results.

  • Cleaning between tests prevents contamination and maintains dimensional accuracy.

  • The instrument’s brass or stainless‑steel construction provides long‑term stability and corrosion resistance.

Interpretation of Results

  • Flow rate (ASTM B212) reflects particle size, shape, and surface friction.

  • Apparent density (ASTM B213) indicates packing efficiency and porosity.

  • Together, they help engineers evaluate powder suitability for pressing, sintering, and additive manufacturing.
